The Portfolio Research team is part of Sustainalytics’ newly formed Methodology & Portfolio Research team. The Portfolio Research team’s mandate is to lead and oversee all research activities and publications at Sustainalytics related to the investment use cases of the company’s products. The team’s main objective is to explore the relationship between Sustainalytics’ research calls and relevant financial measures, including corporate financial performance, portfolio return and portfolio risk. The team’s research covers all relevant asset classes, including alternatives, as well as factor investing and asset allocation.


The successful candidate will join a new team at Sustainalytics that is charged with exploring the investment implications of the company’s research in a quantitatively rigorous manner. The position is an opportunity to conduct and contribute thoughtful research and analysis about the different ways that Sustainalytics’ clients can potentially apply the company’s research products in their investment process. Reporting to the Director, Portfolio Research, the successful candidate will produce insightful, institutional quality research pieces that leverage investment knowledge, financial analysis and portfolio construction and attribution skills.


  • Generate ideas for compelling research papers that help fulfill the team’s mandate
  • Lead individual research pieces (topic selection, research, analysis, writing, review)
  • Present research and findings in multiple fora
  • Collaborate with ESG subject matter experts at Sustainalytics
  • Closely monitor ESG integration trends in the responsible investing market

  • A demonstrated track-record of conducting portfolio research, including risk/return analysis
  • Ability to construct investment portfolios and run attribution analysis
  • A clear and actionable understanding of core financial concepts including: alpha, factor exposures, smart beta, passive vs active management, asset allocation, diversification and tracking error
  • An understanding of ESG research and how it can be applied in the investment process
  • Familiarity with industry research tools, such as Morningstar Direct, Bloomberg and FactSet
  • 3-5 years of work experience
  • Excellent research, analytical and writing skills
  • Ability to work independently and within a strong team environment.
  • Experience working with: MS Excel, Python and Minitab, or other statistical software
  • A CFA designation would be considered an asset
