The Country and Human Rights Research Manager oversees the management of the day-to-day activities for a +5-analyst team that focuses on delivering research for a suite of Sustainalytics’ country and human rights products (Country Risk Rating, Country Screening, Human Rights Radar, Country Involvement). The manager is ultimately responsible for the team’s delivery of high-quality and timely research that meets product and quality requirements. He or she will be accountable for ensuring and improving the performance, productivity and efficiency of the team.

Next to having experience in managing a team, the ideal candidate should have in-depth knowledge on human rights and/or international politics/relations, experience in successfully delivering research, and project management experience. The ability to work in an international fast-paced technical environment is critical. Being able to communicate clearly at all levels, form strong relationships with stakeholders and proactively identify and manage risks is also essential in this role.


  • Lead effective research planning and ensuring timely delivery/QA/sign off on country and human rights research, meeting product requirements (e.g. quality levels).
  • Provide human rights expertise/training on country and human rights related topics to analysts and other research teams
  • Execute multi-stakeholder projects to improve/develop research frameworks, in collaboration with product manager, methodology team and other internal stakeholders
  • Participate regularly in global calls and meetings, as well as client calls
  • Use process improvement tools to continuously optimize research processes and for assessing the root cause of issues
  • Identify improvements for research tools and partner with technology teams to develop and improve research data bases (i.e. SQL Databases, Power BI tools)
  • Ensure appropriate methods and techniques to improve and maintain the highest quality standards in the data collected by the team
  • Lead country and human rights sub-team of 5-10 research analysts by providing clear direction, establishing SMART goals and priorities, conducting performance reviews, and optimizing resource allocation.
  • Stimulates team members to enhance their understanding on the country and human rights research frameworks and to improve analyst guidance on related research
  • Leads hiring/onboarding of new analysts to and ensure the development of the necessary technical skills and content expertise.


  • Graduate degree in related discipline (international law/relations, human rights, business, finance).
  • Expertise in international relations, country analysis, human rights, and/or international norms/ standards is required
  • At least five years of relevant work experience preferably in a research environment, with focus on country and/or company research.
  • At least 1-2 years of experience leading teams
  • Strong analytical skills, entrepreneurial and problem-solving attitude; decisive and persistent.
  • Strong project management and execution skills.
  • A continuous improvement mindset and a solution-oriented mentality to enhance the team’s processes and overall research quality
  • Meticulous and attentive to detail.
  • Strong team player, able to learn from mistakes.
  • Presentation skills (both in spoken and written formats), e.g. ppt skills, client interaction skills;
  • Ability to effectively communicate with local and international teams.
  • Ability to work and adapt in a changing and innovative international environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Power BI, Visio and PowerPoint.
